“Mayan Apocalypse 2012 – Bang or Whimper?”

Uh oh!

So what does the Mayan calendar really say about 2012? Are we going to get sucked up by a black hole or collide with another planet? When is Earth’s time over, and how?

Come join us on December 1st, 2011 as archaeoastronomer Dr. Kevin Mackay answers these questions and more!

This event is FREE and open to the GENERAL PUBLIC. Family and friends are encouraged to come!

“Cosmology and The Creation of the Universe”

Cosmic Microwave Background Timeline

Cosmic Microwave Background Timeline

UPDATE: the lecture video is now available.

Curious about the formation of the universe? Does dark matter and dark energy interest you? This is not your typical “there was a big explosion” presentation!

Dr. Gobeille will take the audience on a journey to the very beginnings of their existence; a time and place that never was. A time when the forces of nature were unified, matter did not exist, and the whole of space inflated; increasing its size 100 trillion trillion trillion trillion times in a flash more than a million trillion trillion times quicker than the blink of an eye!

The bizarre nature of the early universe only begins here as much of the story takes place within the very first second of the existence of space and time. This would be followed by a period known as the primordial fireball; a blazing hot soup of the fundamental particles of nature at such high temperatures it would take 380,000 years to cool to the point of creating the first atoms, a time known as recombination.

From here we will build the earliest stars and galaxies, explore the large scale structure of the universe, and investigate why every galaxy in the universe is moving away from us at titanic speeds.

THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. Family and friends are encouraged to come!
